On Monday mornings, I get anxious:
Is everything going to be okay this week?
Have I prepared enough?
Will our clients love everything I do?
If you break them down, they are all really the same core question:
“Am I good enough?”
Subconsciously, I want to be considered “good enough” in other people’s eyes.
And my fear of not being good enough brings me anxiety, especially on Mondays, because there’s a week full of opportunities for me to blow it! I don’t even realize I’m telling myself, “Sometime this week, people could easily figure out that I’m not good enough.”
So that subconscious thought turns into a dull anxiety that fills my body and mind. I experience it as a sore neck, tight hips, or a headache. My subconscious thinks it’s helping me prepare for a dangerous situation, and it preps my body accordingly.
But then I carry that anxious energy with me into my week, which usually negatively impacts my work, because no one is at their best when they are tense and anxious!
Now, by seeking approval and letting that make me anxious and tense, I’ve accidentally manifested my greatest fear: I’ve proven “I’m not good enough” and have more reasons to worry about it in the future!
This was the life I lived for 28 years. Every single week. Feeling anxious and trying to control it by seeking more and more approval from others. It was never enough. No matter how hard I tried.
There are many people in the world who live this life every day. Confused and scared. Completely driven by their subconscious fear of not being good enough.
For me, through therapy, meditation, and yoga, I became aware of this subconscious pattern. And when you’re aware of the subconscious, by definition, you turn it into conscious awareness.
Conscious awareness is the ability to look at your thoughts, feelings, and emotions and observe them without judgment. There is no good or bad. You just look at them and recognize what they are doing to you.
By raising their awareness, you remove their hold over you. You will notice the tension leave your body and mind. You will create space for positive energy.
In that space, you will start to see that you are already good enough. Doesn’t mean you’re perfect, but it means you’re willing to accept your imperfections and still believe you’re good enough!
You will be amazed by the quality of your work when you really believe in yourself and accept yourself for being exactly as you are. It is an unbelievable transformation. You will do the best work of your life.
In my experience, the hardest part for ambitious people is thinking that they’re being too “easy” on themselves. “If I’m not hard on myself, I won’t get better!”
In some instances that might be true, but overwhelmingly it’s not, and most importantly, it’s a hard life to live—trust me, I’ve lived it. And I’ve learned that being kind to yourself—and believing in yourself—works much better for being the best version of you. Because after all, if you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else?
So, don’t get me wrong, I still wake up with anxiety all the time; I woke up anxious this morning!
But now that I am aware of it, I can remove it, replace it with positive energy, and ultimately be the best version of myself.
The best version of myself does amazing work that is fueled by kindness, empathy, and care.
That’s the kind of life I want to lead every day.
If you want the same, I highly recommend starting with 5 minutes of meditation every morning.
Learn how to spot the subconscious thought, bring awareness to it, and release it. Then, replace it with the positive energy that will naturally emanate from your heart and soul.
The potential positive impact is massive for so many reasons.
I hope that helps someone today.
Have a good week, my friends.
Spark Notes:
Much of the anxiety ambitious professionals feel—especially at the start of the week—comes from a quiet fear of not being “good enough” in other people’s eyes.
That fear drives us to chase approval, which ironically creates the tension and performance pressure that hold us back from doing our best work.
Building awareness of those subconscious patterns allows you to step back, release the tension, and replace it with positive energy.
When you genuinely believe you are already good enough—imperfections included—you unlock a level of creativity, care, and performance that anxiety could never produce.
